Music And Sports: A Healthy Duo

It doesn’t surprise sports fans that their favorite athletes are also good singers and musicians. Before a game, professional players are seen entering the court with their headphones on. In the Olympics, the opening and closing ceremonies are anticipated because of musical performances. Musical artists participate in exhibition matches together with pro athletes, giving everyone a great time.

Teamwork

Teamwork isn’t only experienced in sports. Playing in a band builds a bond among members, just like in any other team sport. A guitar player won’t play the part of a drummer; neither will a drummer play the part of the pianist. When a band plays together, it is expected that each member knows his part. To fully know his part, he would have to listen to the piece over and over again, memorize the parts of the other members, but acknowledge that he won’t be able to play those because he is to play his own part. Like in a basketball team, a center won’t have the same skillset as a point guard. Belonging to a team is always beneficial for a person’s social growth.

Discipline

Desiring to excel in a sport requires more hours of training on and off court, and less hours of watching late night TV. Part of being disciplined is making choices. Children who train for competitive sports choose to spend less time playing with their friends to go straight to the courts after school. Student athletes must maintain high grades for them to continue to represent their schools. For young musicians, rather than going out with friends after school, they stay for band rehearsals.

Being involved in both music and sports promotes physical, mental, and emotional balance. Musician-athletes have a vision for the future that fuels their desire to improve and excel.
